Training to Become a Firefighter

The Rockledge Fire Department is committed to having well trained employees in order to best serve our citizens.  Formal training is required before firefighters are hired by the department.  The department also has structured training programs for all new hires that encompass numerous basic skills as well as apparatus driver/operator training and skills program.  Ongoing training is also provided to all employees such as EMS Refresher Training, Live Fire Training, and Vehicle Extrication Training .

The firefighters that are hired by the City of Rockledge are cross trained as both certified firefighters and certified Emergency Medical Technicians. There is no required order of training for this career path and it can be approached from either the fire side or the EMS side first.. Individuals attending the fire academy will undergo  398 of hours of both classroom and practical instruction.   Most of our firefighters attend the Eastern Florida State College for this training. This institution has an excellent reputation and consistently produces quality firefighters.  We are proud of the fact that several of our employees also instruct at the college.

After successfully completing certification as a firefighter the next step in the career path is to become certified as a Emergency Medical Technician.  This training is also offered through Eastern Florida State College and encompasses 11 credit hours of vocational training of both classroom and practical instruction. Paramedic training is also offered through Eastern Florida State College and encompasses 42 credit hours of advanced vocational training of both classroom and practical instruction. Both programs emphasize “hands on” preparation in real life scenarios. Each firefighter is required to successfully complete both firefighter and either EMT or Paramedic training before being hired.

The Rockledge Fire Department has an excellent ongoing training program dedicated to serving the citizens.   Please feel free to contact our administrative office at (321) 690-3968 if you have any questions and we would be happy to assist  you.
