Where can I get flood zone determination for my property?

The Building Services Division of the City of Rockledge can provide you with this information. Call 690-3984.

Why do I need a building permit for property I own?

Pursuant to the adopted Standard Building Code, any and all work performed required that you obtain a building permit, except for minor repairs. The plans must be reviewed, the material and work inspected to assure proper and safe installation. It is always to your advantage to check with the Building Division before you begin your construction activity. Staff will be happy to determine whether a permit is required for the scope of work you are performing.

What if my HOBO (wheeled garbage container) needs repair?

Can I park my car across the sidewalk if it is in my driveway?

No. Vehicles are not supposed to be parked in such a way as to block pedestrians using the sidewalk for its intended purposes - this is a violation of City code and can subject the owner of the vehicle to a citation.

Which roads in the City are the responsibility of the State of Florida Department of Transportation?

Fiske Boulevard (SR519) and U.S. 1 (SR5); also, Brevard County is responsible for Barnes Boulevard. All other roads are the responsibility of the City of Rockledge.

If I am concerned about code violations, what should I do?

Contact the Code Enforcement Officer at Rockledge City Hall and share your concern. It will be evaluated to determine whether or not it is a violation and what action can be taken. Also, your complaint can be taken anonymously and your name will never be given out.

Can I place yard trash in my wheeled garbage container (Hobo)?

No. Your garbage will not be picked up if yard trash is mixed with household garbage, as the landfill operations will reject loads if they contain any yard trash. Place your yard trash in two (2) 32 gallon garbage cans; once they are full, you can use plastic bags - the bags will be emptied and placed back in the container. Large limbs and branches can be cut into four-foot lengths and placed at curbside for pickup.

What if I observe a street light out?

Report it to Rockledge City Hall with a pole location and pole number (if possible), and it will be reported to Florida Power & Light immediately for repair. You can also call FPL directly at 1-800-468-8243 or online at www.fpl.com.

Can you give me information about planting trees/shrubs/bushes in the right of way area between the sidewalk area and the street?

It is recommended that trees not be planted in this area; however, if a letter of request is sent to the City Manager, approval can be granted but only certain types of trees are allowed (a list will be provided). In all cases trees are to be planted so as not to create a visual hazard or impact the normal use of sidewalks. Shrubs must be maintained at a height of three feet or less.

What should I consider when planting trees on my property?

While the City encourages landscaping and tree planting, always consider sidewalks, driveways, utilities and even your house when planting trees. If placed in the wrong locations, trees can clog sewers, crack sidewalks, interrupt electrical power and TV cable service, and even effect the foundation of a house. Remember to "plan before you plant".

Who operates the parks in the City of Rockledge?

Through a partnership with the City of Rockledge, the parks in Rockledge are operated by the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department Central Area-Mainland Parks Operations (633-1874). The City Manager serves on the Administrative Parks and Recreation Board that supplies assessment and planning of parks and services, and provides oversight of the special recreation taxing district approved by voters in 1971 (the taxing district provides supplemental resources for maintenance of the community center, pool, and recreation complexes).

What if my sidewalk is broken?

If it is creating a hazard (not just cracked), please report it to the Public Works Department so that it can be repaired to eliminate the possibility of an accident.

What about garage sales?

Individual residences are limited to 4 garage sales in any twelve-month period. No permits are required, but signage is limited to three (one at the residence and two at the nearest major intersection(s) to the residence), but only on private property. Signs are not permitted in public rights-of-way, on utility poles, STOP signs, etc.

Do I need a permit to re-roof my home if I perform the work myself?

Yes, any type of repair to the roof requires a building permit. The City checks to make sure compliance with the Codes is being followed and that the proper building materials are being used. For your protection, we do assure the owner and not an unlicensed contractor, is in fact, doing the work being performed.

How many vehicles can a residence have?

Cars are also illegally parked if they block sidewalks.

What can I do about speeding on my street?

This is a common problem anywhere there are streets, especially residential streets. Speeding is a problem that needs to be addressed, particularly for the safety of the children in the community. The Rockledge Police Department has a two person Traffic Unit that is dedicated to addressing these problems. In addition, each police officer has a zone that he/she is responsible for, which includes traffic problems. You may contact the police department 24 hours a day by calling 690-3988 or email the complaint to our traffic officers at traffic@rockledgepolice.com.

What is C.E.R.T.?

C.E.R.T. stands for Community Emergency Response Team. This is a program developed by the Los Angeles Fire Department to assist citizens in the event of earthquakes and other disasters. The premise is that trained citizens will be better prepared to assist each other in an emergency during the critical time immediately after the event, until such time as the professionals can arrive at their location. The Federal Government adopted this program as a model for nationwide use. The program is supported through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

How do I get involved with C.E.R.T.?

You must contact Lori Hedges at 690-3968 at the fire department to sign up for initial training. This training consists of eight classes held one night per week for eight weeks, with each class lasting approximately three hours. Topics include; basic first aid, light search and rescue, fire fighting, hazardous materials recognition, and an overview on how the Emergency Response system works.

What's going on at the fire station on Murrell Road? I see that firefighters are building things on this site.

The firefighters have renewed the effort to build a training center on this site. The construction you have seen is the work of many firefighters to realize this dream. At present they have built a three story tower for ladder work, rope work and hose training. In addition to this, a confined space rescue simulator has been developed and put in place. Plans are to continue to develop this site by including LP Gas and Natural Gas simulated emergency props, an extrication pad, roof ventilation simulator and eventually a burn building. The existing concrete block structure on the south-west corner is planned to be used as a collapse rescue simulator.

What is the monthly amount of the Storm water Utility?

The monthly amount for a single family residence is $3.00 per month. This is based on an average square footage of impervious area per single family home that is 2922 square feet. This is referred to as an Equivalent Rate Unit (ERU).

Why do we charge for water that comes out of the sky?

State and Federal laws now require the treatment of storm water runoff. The governing body for the State of Florida in our area is the Saint Johns Water Management District. Storm water runoff is a major source of pollution to receiving bodies of water.

What are the benefits of treating storm water?

Treating storm water runoff helps to remove pollutants, soil sediments, suspended and settleable solids. Also, there is a benefit of recharging the underwater aquifer used in potable water systems.

Are there any uses for treated storm water?

One main use for treated storm water is for re-use irrigation. The City of Rockledge is presently planning to store and use storm water in the re-use irrigation system. This will be a supplement to the wastewater re-use system.
