Chief LaSata and Sheriff Ivey

Joseph P. LaSata was appointed Chief of Police for the City of Rockledge in June 2013 after competing in a nationwide search. On August 1, 2017, LaSata was chosen to become the City of Rockledge's first Director of Public Safety. His law enforcement career spans over 24 years, and he is the 19th police chief to serve the City of Rockledge. Director LaSata is a highly respected leader in the law enforcement community who began his career in law enforcement with the West Hartford, CT Police Department, where he quickly rose through the ranks. Throughout his career, he has embraced many challenging assignments to include Patrol, Traffic, Detectives, and Internal Affairs which have provided him the opportunity to refine his knowledge, skill and abilities in law enforcement principles, practices, and techniques. Director LaSata is a true advocate of diversity in the workplace, advances in professional development, community policing and has developed programs throughout his career that have collaborated and built bridges with the communities he has served.

The Rockledge Department of Public Safety currently has 124 employees and serves a culturally diverse community of over 27,000 people, covering 12 square miles. Rockledge is the 4th largest city in Brevard County with a Public Safety Department budget of $12.3 million. Rockledge is noted for being one of the safest cities in Brevard County.

Director LaSata holds a Master’s Degree from Barry University in Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree from American International College in Business Administration. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 249th session. Director LaSata also holds numerous training certificates and awards in law enforcement. At the Rockledge Police Department, he has focused on a number of issues to include minority recruitment, use of force training, mechanisms of investigating complaints, Florida State Accreditation, professional development of department members and incorporating a multimedia approach using current technologies.
