Someone had the great idea of putting a Walmart Neighborhood Market where the old Winn-Dixie Plaza is on Barton. What ever happened to this plan? Can the residents of Rockledge still have hope of this happening or continue to rely on long distance drives for our every day groceries? Walmart would be an asset to the economic development in Rockledge. Losing Winn-Dixie, Walmart and Kmart years ago was a huge mistake for the city, as the empty storefronts in the three main plazas can attest.

I read that the city council is considering renaming Fiske Blvd to Martin Luther King Blvd. I can't understand why. There are already 750 roads in America named after Martin Luther King Jr. Why would we need another one. My greatest opposition to this motion is that Fiske Blvd is already named after someone...the first mayor of Rockledge. It's heartbreaking to me that the city would completely disregard the history of our own city and change the name of the street to reflect someone who most likely never stepped foot in our city. The street names, park names and other "dedicated" places should be reserved for those who either served or made an impact on our own city....someone like our 1st mayor. If you are going to name a road after Martin Luther King, change the name of a street that doesn't already bear someone's legacy. This needs to be put to a vote so that the citizens can decide.

I am noticing a lot more people are utilizing River Road for exercising, biking, events, and dog walking. My kids and I walk River Road everyday, it would be nice to have sidewalks and not walk on people's property or in the road. We really enjoy the beauty of the river, the cool breeze, and looking at the old houses. I'm sure this is an idea many are in favor of.

I would love to see sidewalks all the way down Barnes to Cousins and a crosswalk for US1. We love biking and walking by the river but it is too dangerous to take that way.

It would be nice to get some feedback from the elected officials to ensure that the " Rockledge Voice" is actually being heard.

There is a desperate need for a traffic light at the intersection of Roy Wall and Fiske Blvd. This summer there will be an addition 100-200 more people moving into the Health First Business Center, which will increase traffic even more. There are times now in the afternoon that there are 10 cars waiting to turn left at this intersection. It is very dangerous trying to get across 4 lanes and a medial turn lane to turn left onto Fiske to get to I-95. It is a life threatening event waiting to happen.

The walk around Jimmie Weaver park is beautiful and many residents use it for pleasure walks as well as exercise. But with the hot summer months ahead, it would be nice to extend the hours past dusk and install some solar powered lighting along the path so that residents can enjoy the walks during the cooler evening hours as well. This would also improve the Relay for Life event so people can walk the lake where there is pavement instead of through the grass which is how the event is done now. Additional picnic benches on the back part (south side) of the lake would be a nice addition as well as more exercise stations around the rest of the lake.

If Walmart has decided to pull out of the old Winn Dixie plaza, then steps need to be made to bring another grocery store in. Publix should not be the only option the citizens of this great city has. I'm not including Aldi's because while it may be considered "in" Rockledge, it knocks on the door of Viera. Grocery stores should be central to the city and conveniently located for ALL residents. And they should have more than one place to choose from. I'm sure there are many other companies that would jump at the opportunity to move there or in the old Kmart Plaza if given the chance. Walmart is not the only option.

In study after study by real estate companies, universities, and even HUD, having a well-maintained, welcoming neighborhood entrance sign/mural increases neighborhood values, attractiveness, and promotes neighborhood pride. Rockledge has some great neighborhood signs; "Woodsmere", "Timbers West", "Philips Landing", and others, but great neighborhoods like "Rockledge Country Club Estates", "EstRidge", "Shepard Park", etc. remain nameless except on city planning maps. So, my recommendation is that Rockledge either use a portion of it's redevelopment funding, or the city pursue federal/state grants or other funding (if/where they exist) to construct unique, attractive, well-built entrance signs/murals/walls for all applicable Rockledge neighborhoods.

Close down Barton Blvd and line the streets with Rockledge Business Booths that the kids can go trick or treating on during Halloween. The Rockledge Businesses can compete decorating their booth/table. Have costume contests, pumpkin decorating contest, etc. It gives the businesses opportunity to promote themselves to the community while giving the kids someplace safe to trick or treat where there is not traffic or crazy people trying to hurt kids. Businesses could include bounce houses and/or games for the kids and of course candy. "Nightmare on Barton Blvd" ,"Boo on Barton" are just some suggested names for the event. Shouldn't cost the city that much money since each business would be responsible for providing their own items.

Why not have our OWN Christmas Parade down Barton Blvd instead of a join parade with Cocoa? But in contrast to Cocoa, it should be a night parade with lights. Since Barton is the main road, it would also be nice to see all of Barton decorated for the holidays. Holding light decorating contest for the businesses on Barton would create a beautiful avenue for all of the residents to enjoy, visit and bring customers to those businesses. Maybe even close the road down one weekend in December like you do for the car show, simply for people to get out and walk the road to enjoy the lights with holiday music, local school chorus performances, caroling, gift wrapping, pictures with Santa, maybe craft fair for holiday shopping? Just a focus on the holiday season. People may travel for miles to see our "Main Street" Christmas display and put Rockledge on the map for holiday traditions. Could incorporate it with "light up Rockledge" and make it bigger, more attended (and sell more city ornaments).
