Preparedness Tip 2 - Assemble a Kit

Living in Florida means that we face the potential of tropical weather. As long as you’re prepared, there’s no need to panic!

  • Prepare a “Go Pack” of essential items that can be ready for transport with short notice.
  • Place all of your important documents in one place to be taken with you in case of evacuation.
  • Stock up on nonperishable food items, water, and propane.
  • Don’t forget to stock up on pet supplies!

At Home Emergency Supply Kit

  • Two flashlights
  • Battery operated radio
  • Six extra sets of batteries
  • Gel freezer packs to keep food cold
  • Cooler
  • Matches/lighter
  • Camping stove/grill
  • Tarp, towels, can opener, trash bags
  • Drinking water (1 gallon per person per day for 7-14 days)
  • Nonperishable food, including for pets
  • Cell phone

Evacuation Kit

  • Sleeping bags and/or blankets
  • Can of tire sealer
  • Air or foam mattress
  • Identification for family members
  • Important documents
  • Extra clothing, shoes, etc.
  • Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, paper towels, etc.
  • Books, games, playing cards
  • Cell phone chargers
  • Cash
  • Food and water from at home supplies

When the order is given to evacuate - EVACUATE!

  • Take your evacuation kits with you.
  • Turn off water, gas, and electricity.
  • Lock all windows and doors.
  • Notify friends and relatives of your destination and let them know when you arrive safely.
  • Make arrangements for pets!
