[ARCHIVED] Hurricane Preparedness Tip #4

Preparedness Tip 4 - Maintain Private Lift Stations and Stormwater Ponds

Private Stormwater Ponds

The City of Rockledge maintains public stormwater ponds and ditches year-round to ensure the system operates effectively during storm events. However, stormwater ponds within many subdivisions are the responsibility of the subdivision’s Homeowners Association (HOA).

HOAs are encouraged to inspect their stormwater ponds—particularly the outfalls and control structures—for the following:

  • Obstructions or blockages
  • Overgrown vegetation that may restrict water flow
  • Debris that could be blown in during a storm (e.g., patio screens, branches, palm fronds, or even garbage can lids)

Important Reminder: Any item that enters a pond during a storm can restrict drainage or block the system entirely, increasing the risk of flooding.

Private Lift Stations

During hurricanes, Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) are a serious risk—especially for private lift stations. SSOs can lead to raw sewage spilling into public areas and waterways like the St. Johns River or the Indian River Lagoon, creating both environmental and public health hazards.

The City maintains over 50 public sewer lift stations, and during storm events, City crews prioritize these systems. However, owners of private lift stations must be prepared to maintain and secure their equipment.

Is Your Private Lift Station Ready?

Ask yourself the following:

  • When was your lift station last inspected?
  • Has it been recently serviced by a qualified contractor?
    • Were the findings documented and repairs made?
    • Are at least two pumps installed and functioning?
  • Is the station protected against flooding (seals, gaskets, etc.)?
  • Is the electrical panel weatherproof and easily accessible?
  • Is your emergency contact information up to date with the City’s Wastewater Division?
  • Is your contractor available 24/7 and current in the City's records?
  • Do you have visible emergency signage at the station, and is it still accurate?
  • Do you have a backup power plan (e.g., generator access)?

Contact the Rockledge Wastewater Treatment Department at (321) 221-7540, Option 6 for any questions or to update your lift station records.
